I hold a PhD degree in Cellular and Molecular Medicine with a speciality in oncology from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa under the supervision of Dr. Benjamin K. Tsang. I have recently completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the department of Immunology in the Max Rady College of Medicine in the University of Manitoba under the supervision of Dr. Aaron J. Marshall and a research fellowship at the Research Institute in Oncology and Hematology (RIOH), CancerCare Manitoba under the supervision of Dr. Spencer B. Gibson. I have an extensive laboratory and research experience in the field of molecular biology. Briefly, after obtaining my bachelor degree in Biology from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, I joined the MSc program in Molecular Biology at the faculty of medicine, Kuwait University with specialty in Molecular Medicine under the supervision of Dr. Moussa Alkhalaf working on breast cancer and osteosarcoma. There, I was introduced to several experimental techniques (cell culture, Western blot, proliferation assay, microarrays) that were vital for my future studies. I then joined Dr. Benjamin Tsang’s lab at the University of Ottawa working on gynecological cancers (ovarian and cervical carcinomas). There, I have gained extensive experience in several molecular and biochemical techniques (adenoviral infection, transfection, siRNA knockdown, gene overexpression, molecular cloning, pulse-chase assays using radioactive isotopes, immunofluorescence imaging, cell viability assays, etc.). Furthermore, I had the opportunity to mentor several students by training them on the experimental techniques at the lab, writing and revising their research projects, and providing progress reports to my supervisor. I had also participated with another colleague in the writing of a grant which was successfully funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. At this point of my career, I wanted to extend my knowledge beyond solid tumors, so I joined Aaron Marshall‘s (University of Manitoba) and Spencer Gibson’s (RIOH) labs who work on the B cell malignancy chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Through my fellowship, I have expanded my repertoire of experimental techniques (flow cytometry, nucleofection, confocal microscopy, migration assays, cellular adhesion assays, qPCR, mesenchymal stromal cell primary cultures) and diversified my expertise to include both solid tumors and leukemias.

I initially explored deeply into the research area of Candida infections and plant essential oils throughout my academic and professional journey. Starting at the Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM), India, I examined the effects of chemically synthesized compounds and standard antifungals against Candida species during my Master's program. At Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMI), India, I extensively studied the impact of plant essential oils on the growth and virulence factors of different Candida species, completing my Ph.D. in 2014. My postdoctoral fellowship at Kuwait University (KU) centered on identifying potent plant-derived treatments for oral Candida infections, utilizing various methodologies and advanced microscopy techniques. After KU, I joined as a Research Consultant at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), where I continued exploring native desert plants for bioactive compounds. Across IIIM, JMI, KU, and KISR, I have developed strong research skills, adept at independent research work, project design, and grant proposal writing. I possess extensive experience in drafting experimental articles, reviews, abstracts, presentations, and posters, I now serve as a Research Specialist at Green Plains Consultants (GPC). Here, I apply my expertise in sustainable solutions for environmental and agricultural issues while furthering my research and project development skills.

Dr. Vinod Kumar is a scientist with 20 years of research experience in the field of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, Plant Tissue Culture, Plant-Microbe Interactions, Community Microbiology, Algal Biotechnology, Toxicology, and Genomics. He is currently working as a Research Scientist in the Biotechnology Department, Environment and Life Sciences Center, Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR). His skill sets include plant tissue culture, molecular biology, and genetic engineering, functional validation of secondary metabolites, analysis tools such as PCR, Southern, Northern, Western analysis, cell culture, microscopy, qPCR, RT PCR, HPLC, GC, NGS, etc. He is actively involved in mentoring and leading a team in R&D activities. He is a recipient of several research grants and published over 40 peer-reviewed international research publications and book chapters, patents, and review articles. He served as a reviewer for several international journals. He is an expert member of the research proposal review committee for awarding research grants in his areas of expertise. He has delivered many seminar presentations in international conferences and symposia and workshops. During his early career assignments, he worked as a post-doctoral research fellow at Norman Borlaug Center, Institute for Plant Genomics and Biotechnology, Texas A & M University, USA on various aspects of plant genetic engineering. He contributed to the development of drought-tolerant and disease-resistant cotton, developed genetic engineering tools for Sorghum improvement. Previously he worked for Central Food Technological Research Institute, India on genetic engineering of various economically important plants, production of high-value metabolites from genetically engineered root cultures, and microalgal cultivation for the production of high protein biomass and carotenoids.
